Review: Jersey Boys (Prince Edward Theatre)

It’s more than 6 months since the opening of night of Jersey Boys – I originally published my round-up of 1st night reviews back on March 20th! I’ve had tickets booked for most of that time, so it was a relief to actually see the show last night! But was it worth the wait? Continue reading ‘Review: Jersey Boys (Prince Edward Theatre)’

Review: Piaf (Donmar Warehouse)

Yesterday marked the final night of the Donmar’s latest sell-out success, Piaf. Well, it was the last night until it reappears in 3 weeks time at the Vaudeville Theatre for another ‘limited’ 14 week run. I booked my tickets almost as soon as the booking period opened, so it’s been a long wait to actually see the show – but was it worth it?

Review: Rain Man (Apollo Theatre)

The show’s first night was meant to happen last week, but then things don’t always happen as they’re originally intended. Just one week into rehearsals, director David Grindley left the show and was replaced by playwright/director Terry Johnson

So it actually turned out that last night’s performance was actually the final preview… apparently the show’s producers didn’t feel the need to reduce the price of my tickets. Fortunately, by the time I had watched last night’s show, I really didn’t care…

Review: Hairspray (Shaftsbury Theatre)

When Hairspray opened in London, I thought the ticket prices were even more ridiculous than normal, with the producers having imported Broadway prices at the same time as the show. But eventually I relented, and went to see the show last weekend… and thank goodness I did!

Review: They’re Playing Our Song (Menier Chocolate Factory)

Whilst the latest musical offering from the Menier didn’t garner the critical acclaim of some of its previous efforts, the sell-out audience didn’t seem to care when I went to see the show last week…

I have been looking forward to seeing it since news of the production was announced. I was shocked by the negativity of some of the reviews, especially Christopher Hart’s in the Sunday Times, and was left wondering whether my trip would be a wasted one…

Things that have caught my attention this week

It’s been a quiet week for me – I’m off to New York on the weekend, so the next shows I see will be on Broadway… in the meantime, here’s a few things in the theatre world that have caught my eye so far this week…

Review: West Side Story (Sadler’s Wells)

After the mild disappointment of my trip to see The Wizard of Oz on Saturday, yesterday was the turn of West Side Story at Sadler’s Wells, which made up for any lingering disappointment.

I’m not going to write too much about West Side Story, as I’m not sure I can do justice to either the show, or the production itself. There has also been a lot written about it, given that this year marks the show’s 50th anniversary. If you are interested, I plan to do a bit of a round-up of the articles and reviews later this week (but if you can’t wait until then, check out the Guardian editorial or a Times article.

But first, what did I think about the show?
