‘Ordinary Days’ at the Finborough and other new musicals

Regular readers of this blog will know that I complain pretty frequently about the dearth of original new musicals, but the plethora of jukebox musicals. Having said that, I don’t want you to get the impression that I’m entirely dismissive of ‘jukebox’ shows. In fact, I’m off to the Prince Edward Theatre tonight to see one – Jersey Boys – and have been looking forward to seeing the show for ages.

Despite that, it’s great to note that there are options out there at the moment for fans of new musical theatre, and it comes from talent on both sides of the pond.

My top 5 musical theatre actresses

If you’d read this blog before, you might have noticed links to another blog – Musical Top Fives – where I intended to write about musical theatre only, in the form of lists of top fives… I’ve decided that there’s just no real point in keeping the 2 things separate any more (which might also mean that more people read them!)… I’m going to start by re-visiting something I wrote a few weeks back – my 5 favourite musical theatre actresses.

There are some hugely talented musical theatre actresses on both sides of the pond. I was trying to decide who my Top 5 are – so here they are… I have only considered people who I have seen live on stage… read on to find out more

CastAlbums.org website

I recently discovered a fantastic website, and wanted to share it with you. If you love musical theatre, then this really is an invaluable resource.

As the name suggests, CastAlbums.org is a searchable database of audio and video recordings, but it really is so much more than that. It combines aspects of an online shop, database and community – just think of a musical theatre-themed combination of amazon, imdb and myspace.

The thing that struck me initially was the sheer volume of data included – the database already includes more than 3000 shows, 30,000 songs, and close to 50,000 people. It includes both official cast recordings and non-commercial recordings like demos and live recordings. Perhaps most importantly, I really trust the data as it has been built up by people who know and care about musical theatre – the site’s ‘users’, which currently number ~1700.
