Review: Hairspray (Shaftsbury Theatre)

When Hairspray opened in London, I thought the ticket prices were even more ridiculous than normal, with the producers having imported Broadway prices at the same time as the show. But eventually I relented, and went to see the show last weekend… and thank goodness I did!

Review: They’re Playing Our Song (Menier Chocolate Factory)

Whilst the latest musical offering from the Menier didn’t garner the critical acclaim of some of its previous efforts, the sell-out audience didn’t seem to care when I went to see the show last week…

I have been looking forward to seeing it since news of the production was announced. I was shocked by the negativity of some of the reviews, especially Christopher Hart’s in the Sunday Times, and was left wondering whether my trip would be a wasted one…

Things that have caught my attention this week

It’s been a quiet week for me – I’m off to New York on the weekend, so the next shows I see will be on Broadway… in the meantime, here’s a few things in the theatre world that have caught my eye so far this week…

The Friday musical round-up: 4th July

Apologies for the fact that I haven’t written my friday round-up for a couple of weeks. I’ve covered a number of the big announcements elsewhere on my blog (e.g. They’re Playing Our Song coming to the Menier Chocolate Factory), so you haven’t missed too much of major excitement.

So, in this week’s musical theatre news…

Group theatre trips for the rest of 2008

I help to run a theatre group at the company I work for, which arranges trips every 3-4 weeks to shows on in London. It helps that we get cheaper tickets because of the group discounts that producers generally offer.

We arrange our programme 6 months at a time, and since it’s the start of July, we’re just finalising the list of shows for the rest of the year. After a couple of discussions and some email back-and-forth, we have agreed our selection. We think it’s a pretty well balanced programme, so read of if you want some ideas for what to see.

Where theatre and sport collide: Michael Billington on Darts

For those of you that haven’t already seen this morning’s edition of The Guardian, I’d highly encourage you to pay a trip the newspaper’s website. Over the next couple of days, there is a fabulous feature in the paper’s G2 section, where the arts critics and sports writers swap roles for the day.
