A Little Night Music cast announced – fantastic

Apologies for my absence over the last few weeks – I have just changed job, so things have been a little more hectic than usual at work…

There hasn’t been a massive amount of news in the last couple of weeks (apart from a flurry in recent days that I’ll cover in my weekly round-up). However, there was some major casting news at the back end of the week though which deserves its own post – and it comes courtesy of the Menier Chocolate Factory

La Cage Aux Folles IS coming to the West End

This was announced over a week ago (see What’s on Stage and Playbill articles for more), but for some reason I forgot to write about it at the time…

Review: They’re Playing Our Song (Menier Chocolate Factory)

Whilst the latest musical offering from the Menier didn’t garner the critical acclaim of some of its previous efforts, the sell-out audience didn’t seem to care when I went to see the show last week…

I have been looking forward to seeing it since news of the production was announced. I was shocked by the negativity of some of the reviews, especially Christopher Hart’s in the Sunday Times, and was left wondering whether my trip would be a wasted one…

Coming to a West End theatre near you?

Back in March, when this blog was still just days old, I wrote a post entitled ‘Upcoming shows – why musical theatre fans should be excited’ in which I talked about 4 shows rumoured to be coming to London that I was looking forward to. One of the shows, Spring Awakening, has since announced that it will be opening at the Lyric Hammersmith.

Over recent weeks, the number of new shows either being rumoured, or announced, seems to have accelerated. I thought it was worth providing a round-up of rumours, to give you a sense of what you can expect to see arriving in London over the next 6-12 months.

The Friday musical round-up: 4th April

As promised, it’s time for my weekly round-up of this week’s musical theatre news. Here’s what has happened last Friday…

And so, this week…

  1. Kevin Spacey criticised the BBC this week for what he considers to be “a 13-week promotion for a musical” that is ‘I’d Do Anything’ – for more on this, see my response here or my round-up of critics’ responses here
  2. Peter Pan – El Musical opened at the Garrick Theatre this week, receiving consistently terrible reviews, including a zero-star one from The Guardian. For a full round-up of what the critics said, check here
  3. Suzanne Shaw, recent winner of ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’ and formerly of Hear’Say, announced as the newest cast member of Chicago, in which she’ll play the part of Roxie Hart
  4. David Essex announced that he has written a new jukebox musical based on his own songs, entitled All the Fun of the Fair. It has initially announced a 3-month tour schedule. See the official website here
  5. Alexia Khadime confirmed to star as Elphaba in Wicked from June 2009, taking over from Kerry Ellis who was continue playing the role on Broadway. Khadime is currently starring in the Lion King. See original press release here
  6. La Cage Aux Folles is now not expected to transfer to the West End until at least September, according to whispers on quoted on the Philip Quast fan-site here. There has been no official confirmation of this from the Menier Chocolate Factory thus far

Have a great weekend!
