Musicals on my iPod

I’ve just back from holiday, and apart from the 2 shows I saw on Broadway (A Chorus Line and Gypsy), my only musical theatre sustenance has been via my iPod. And given how much time I’ve been spending listening to them, I thought it might be worth sharing some of my favourites with you. So, in alphabetical order, here are 7 CDs that I’d recommend, one for each day of the week…

You can buy any of the CDs on amazon by clicking on the link (and amazon will even pay me a few pence if you do actually buy anything!).

I’d Do Anything’s Samantha Barks is Sally Bowles

Another one of the runners up from ‘I’d Do Anything’ has been cast in a show, and rather unsurprisingly, it’s Bill Kenwright who is responsible. 3rd placed Samantha Barks will be playing the part of Sally Bowles in his upcoming tour production of Kander & Ebb’s Cabaret, opposite dancer Wayne Sleep.

The Friday musical round-up: 4th July

Apologies for the fact that I haven’t written my friday round-up for a couple of weeks. I’ve covered a number of the big announcements elsewhere on my blog (e.g. They’re Playing Our Song coming to the Menier Chocolate Factory), so you haven’t missed too much of major excitement.

So, in this week’s musical theatre news…

I’d Do Anything – 12 finalists and my predictions for what comes next

It’s now nearly a week since the final of I’d Do Anything, so the dust has started to settle. Having blogged about the show throughout the series, I still had some opinions that I wanted to share… So in the first of my last few posts about ‘I’d Do Anything’, here’s my rundown on each of the 12 finalists, with my predictions on where their career will go next. They are in order of their position in the show (12 = the 1st person to have been voted out of the competition)…

Read on to find out what I think – I’d also love to know if you have any other ideas, or have heard gossip or rumours!

I’d Do Anything – the semi final live show

First of all, let me start by congratulating all 4 of the girls who have made it to the semi-finals. I really think that the overall standard of the contestants in this series has been much higher than in the previous searches for Maria and Joseph, so it is a hugely impressive achievement just getting this far. That will almost certainly come as no consolation to the 3 girls who miss out on the role, but I’m sure that all 4 girls will have a successful West End career ahead of them.

As you’ll have seen if you read my pre-show post yesterday, Rachel was the bookies favourite to leave this week, with Samantha the clear favourite to win the role of Nancy. Read on to find out what happened in the Saturday live show, and whether I still think the bookies are right…

Liza with a Z – a must-buy DVD for musical theatre fans (and only £5)

Box for DVD

I was buying a present on amazon a couple of months back, and the recommendation system suggested that I might want to buy a copy of ‘Liza with a Z’. For some reason it was reduced to less than £5 (from a full-price of £17) so it wasn’t exactly a difficult decision to make and I bought it.

Fast forward 2 months and this weekend I finally took the DVD off the shelf and watched it. I’m now in shock that it only cost £5 – an absolute bargain and a must-have for any true musical theatre fan…
