Great directors at the National Theatre

Yesterday Nicholas Hytner announced a number of shows that will be coming to the National Theatre in 2009… unsurprisingly, most of the newspapers have focused on the news that Helen Mirren will be performing in a new production of Phaedra, with headlines including:

Don’t get me wrong – I’m also excited about this news. I’m just also pretty excited about some of the other news, particuarly around directors Continue reading ‘Great directors at the National Theatre’

Mark Shenton on new musicals

I’m a huge fan of theatre critic and journalist Mark Shenton, and an avid reader of his daily blog on The Stage – frankly, any musical theatre fan out there who doesn’t read what he has to say is missing out.

Things that have caught my attention this week

It’s been a quiet week for me – I’m off to New York on the weekend, so the next shows I see will be on Broadway… in the meantime, here’s a few things in the theatre world that have caught my eye so far this week…

Review: West Side Story (Sadler’s Wells)

After the mild disappointment of my trip to see The Wizard of Oz on Saturday, yesterday was the turn of West Side Story at Sadler’s Wells, which made up for any lingering disappointment.

I’m not going to write too much about West Side Story, as I’m not sure I can do justice to either the show, or the production itself. There has also been a lot written about it, given that this year marks the show’s 50th anniversary. If you are interested, I plan to do a bit of a round-up of the articles and reviews later this week (but if you can’t wait until then, check out the Guardian editorial or a Times article.

But first, what did I think about the show?
