The Friday musical round-up: 26th September

Not for the first time, I have failed to write my Friday round-up for a couple of weeks, due to a combination of lack of time and lack of news…

It’s still been a little quiet on the musical theatre news front, but there’s just about enough to sustain a post, so here I am… For those of you who are slightly more observant, you might notice me slip in a couple of things that didn’t strictly happen in the last week. Enjoy… Continue reading ‘The Friday musical round-up: 26th September’

Coming to a West End theatre near you?

Back in March, when this blog was still just days old, I wrote a post entitled ‘Upcoming shows – why musical theatre fans should be excited’ in which I talked about 4 shows rumoured to be coming to London that I was looking forward to. One of the shows, Spring Awakening, has since announced that it will be opening at the Lyric Hammersmith.

Over recent weeks, the number of new shows either being rumoured, or announced, seems to have accelerated. I thought it was worth providing a round-up of rumours, to give you a sense of what you can expect to see arriving in London over the next 6-12 months.

The Friday musical round-up: 11th April

It’s Friday, so once again, it’s time for my weekly round-up on the major news in UK musical theatre. News includes 1 new opening, 2 new show confirmations, an angry response from a Producer!

And so, this week…

  1. Ben Elton confirmed to write book for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to Phantom of the Opera, although it’s unclear when the show will actually be finished. Elton previously worked with Lloyd Webber on The Beautiful Game
  2. Gypsy was rumoured to be coming to London in 2009, possibly starring Patti LuPone, the star of the recently-opened Broadway production. David Ian of LiveNation declared his interest to the Daily Mail this week (see the original article here)
  3. The producer of Peter Pan – El Musical hit out at London’s theatre critics for their terrible reviews of his show – in case you haven’t seen any reviews, the show was thoroughly panned (including zero stars from the Guardian!). For my review round-up, click here
  4. Elaine Stritch announced her return to London for a limited season of her one-woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty, which will be on at the Shaw Theatre from 31st July – 10th August
  5. Black and White Ball, the “new” Cole Porter opened at the newly-refurbished Kings Head Theatre to generally positive, but slightly underwhelming, reviews. See my review round-up here
  6. Eurobeat, billed as “the hilarious world of the Eurovision Song Contest LIVE ON STAGE!” confirmed a regional tour, which should hopefully culminate in a West End transfer. The show was a hit in Edinburgh, so find out more on the official website

Have a great weekend!
