‘Ordinary Days’ at the Finborough and other new musicals

Regular readers of this blog will know that I complain pretty frequently about the dearth of original new musicals, but the plethora of jukebox musicals. Having said that, I don’t want you to get the impression that I’m entirely dismissive of ‘jukebox’ shows. In fact, I’m off to the Prince Edward Theatre tonight to see one – Jersey Boys – and have been looking forward to seeing the show for ages.

Despite that, it’s great to note that there are options out there at the moment for fans of new musical theatre, and it comes from talent on both sides of the pond.

A Little Night Music cast announced – fantastic

Apologies for my absence over the last few weeks – I have just changed job, so things have been a little more hectic than usual at work…

There hasn’t been a massive amount of news in the last couple of weeks (apart from a flurry in recent days that I’ll cover in my weekly round-up). However, there was some major casting news at the back end of the week though which deserves its own post – and it comes courtesy of the Menier Chocolate Factory

Great directors at the National Theatre

Yesterday Nicholas Hytner announced a number of shows that will be coming to the National Theatre in 2009… unsurprisingly, most of the newspapers have focused on the news that Helen Mirren will be performing in a new production of Phaedra, with headlines including:

Even if you read his regular blog, you’ll still unlikely to read everything he writes – he’s a prolific journalist, and contributes to a host of different publications, including broadway.com, theatreVoice and the Sunday Express.

La Cage Aux Folles IS coming to the West End

This was announced over a week ago (see What’s on Stage and Playbill articles for more), but for some reason I forgot to write about it at the time…

My month and a half of musicals

It’s the end of July and if the Ambassador Theatre Group are anything to go by, producers are worrying about how they’re going to fill their theatres over the summer months. ATG have launched Summer Saver, a website where you can book the best tickets in the house for £25 for a host of big shows… But whilst August appears to be a quiet time for theatres, it seems to be a busy patch for me.
