Another musical being adapted for film by Rob Marshall – ‘Nine’

I’m actually a little late in noticing this news, so I suspect I’m not the only one… it seems to have taken some time to make it across the sea from the USA, as I haven’t yet seen it on any of the websites that I look at!

It has been confirmed that Rob Marshall, who directed the film adaptation of Chicago, is turning his hand to another stage-to-film number – this time he will direct Maury Yeston’s Nine.

I don’t actually know much about the show (see here if you want some background), apart from a few of the better-known songs, in particular the incredibly beautiful ‘Unusual Way’). Despite my ignorance, I’m already looking forward to seeing it. Rob Marshall’s adaptation of Chicago was brilliant (buy it here), because he took a fantastic stage show, but was willing to reinvent it rather than just transporting it from stage to screen (as happened with the miserable recent film of The Producers).

According to the film’s IMDB entry, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren and Marion Cotillard are already in place to be in the show. On top of that, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench are rumoured also to be joining the project. After Kidman’s vocal performance in ‘Moulin Rouge’, I’m slightly nervous about her playing the lead, but with a cast like this, a strong box office performance seems almost certain.

Let’s hope Marshall can repeat the success of Chicago and let’s hope that Nicole Kidman has continued to have singing lessons over the last few years…
