The Friday musical round-up: 2nd May

Once again, it’s time for my round-up of this week’s musical theatre news. And after a startling lack of news last week, this week has seem a plethora of announcements. Read on to find out about 2 new musicals, 2 extended runs, 1 London transfer, 1 rumour, 1 show in development, and a new writing festival - not bad for just 7 days!!

  1. Kings Head Theatre has announced that it will stage the premiere of another new musical, Betwixt!, from 6th May. See information about the show on the theatre’swebsite here or at offwestend.com. The cast includes Abi Finley, who got to the semi-final of the BBC’s ‘How do you solve a problem like Maria?’
  2. Perfect Pitch new musical showcase, where Betwixt! was originally premiered, this week announced that this year’s event will move to the West End, hosted at the Trafalgar Studios
  3. Jersey Boys appears to be selling well after receiving strong press reviews - it has extended its booking period for another 6 months, until the end of April next year
  4. Adam Gwon, the up-and-coming American composer (see his official website here) is going to have his show, Ordinary Days, premiered in London later this year. The show will run for 5 performances at the Finborough Theatre in November. For more information, or to book tickets, see the theatre’s website
  5. Zorro will indeed be coming to the Garrick Theatre for its London run, starting previews on 30th June (as per the rumour reported last week’s round-up). As expected, Matt Rawle is the only one of the 3 principles who is remaining with the show when it reaches London. See the official website here
  6. Lee Mead extends his run in Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for 3 more months, until January 2009. The news is likely to prove a relief for any fans of the BBC’s Any Dream Will Do, who haven’t yet got round to seeing the show.
  7. A Little Night Music continues to be tipped as the Menier Chocolate Factory’s Christmas musical (see this week’s What’s on Stage gossip or my March post)… but I still want to know whether they’ll be producing a musical this summer too…
  8. Derren Litten, the creator of TV show, ‘Benidorm’ is writing a musical (his first) - he is going to be working with composer David Arnold and lyricist Don Black (see original news on The Stage’s website here

If you got through all of that, well done! Have a great weekend…
